Ordering coffee is an essential skill for any traveler in Vietnam. Many people are accustomed to the Vietnamese word for coffee, cà phê. I'll be discussing some common phrases, with the Vietnamese on the left and their L1 translation on the right.
The words below are what you would commonly see as part of the process. Note that, in this country,
when you are ordering, the customer typically receives a very small café and can refill it as you
drink it. This is more about drinking coffee slowly. When it's your turn, you would say:
Xin chào - hello
Cho tôi một ly cà phê đen không đường - one black coffee without sugar
Cho tôi một ly cà phê sữa đá - one iced coffee with condensed milk
Cho tôi một ly cà phê trứng - one egg coffee
Cho tôi một ly cà phê không đá - one coffee with no ice
Cho tôi một ly cà phê ít đường - one coffee with less sugar
If you have any questions, here are some common questions to ask:
Xin chào - hello
Bạn có bán cà phê không - Do you have coffee?
Cà phê này của bạn có phải là xay tại chỗ không - Is this coffee ground on-site?
Nó rất đắt - It's very expensive
Cho tôi thêm đường - more sugar please
Cho tôi thêm sữa - more milk please
Tôi muốn nước nóng - I want hot water
Tôi muốn trả tiền - I want to pay
Additional useful phrases:

Không có gì - you're welcome
The phrases Tôi muốn ... and Cho tôi ... are both polite ways of ordering. The first would usually mean "I want..." and the second is "Give me...".
