The past tense in German has two main forms: Präteritum (simple past) and Perfekt (present perfect). They are used differently depending on context and region.

Präteritum (Simple Past)

• Mainly used in written language (books, reports)
• Common with sein, haben, modal verbs, and some frequently used verbs like gehen, kommen
• Formed by adding specific endings to the stem (strong verbs change vowel)

Examples:

• ich ging (I went)
• du kamst (you came)
• er war (he was)
• wir hatten (we had)

Perfekt (Present Perfect)

• Mainly used in spoken language and informal writing
• Formed with auxiliary verb haben or sein + past participle
• Most verbs use haben, but verbs indicating movement/change of state use sein

Examples:

• ich bin gegangen (I have gone / I went)
• du hast gemacht (you have done / you did)
• er ist gekommen (he has come / he came)
• wir haben gegessen (we have eaten / we ate)

Past Participle Formation

• Regular verbs: ge- + stem + -t → machen → gemacht
• Strong verbs: vowel change + ge- + suffix -en → fahren → gefahren
• Mixed verbs: vowel change + ge- + -t → bringen → gebracht
