Schwul (der Schwule for a gay man) is the standard German adjective for "gay," specifically referring to homosexual men. It can also be used as a noun meaning "gay person." For lesbians, the more common German term is lesbisch for the adjective, die Lesbe for a lesbian person.

Note: Unlike in English, schwul is generally not offensive in German when used appropriately; it's the equivalent of "gay." However, like any identity term, context and tone matter.
